Provinces of Ituri

The Congolese provinces of Ituri, North and South Kivu, bordering Uganda and Rwanda, have been hotbeds of instability for more than 20 years. From 1996 to 2003, they were the arena of the battles of the First and Second Congolese Wars, and since 2004, another military conflict has flared up there.

The government of the country and the UN peacekeepers (MONUSCO) are confronted by a whole conglomerate of factions. Some even created a developed network of bases in rugged tropical forests and, in fact, became a kind of quasi-states.

One such faction is the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has grown dramatically in recent years and even established ties with the Islamic State. Its militants regularly carry out raids on settlements and executions of civilians.

The DRC armed forces and UN peacekeepers occasionally carry out operations to clear the province of ADF bases, but the militants are quickly rebuilding their numbers and continuing their attacks.
