Indian authorities are threatening Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter employees with jail for refusing to erase data that “undermines national security.”
We are talking about the removal of information related to the protests of Indian farmers. Several written warnings sent to companies mention specific workers from India who are facing arrest if Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter do not comply with the demands of the authorities, writes The Wall Street Journal.
WhatsApp, in turn, said that the company fulfills requests “if they meet international standards.” Facebook added that the social network “responds to government requests for data in accordance with applicable law and terms of service.”
And Twitter noted that the platform “will continue to uphold the fundamental principles of an open Internet.”
Earlier, India’s Minister of Communications, Electronics and Information Technology accused digital giants of double standards in content blocking decisions. The country’s authorities have tightened regulation of American social networks
